Teatro del Silenzio and Rocca di Pietracassia MTB
With this Mountain Bike Tour, we go along a beautiful area of Tuscany, between Palaia, a small village in the province of Pisa and Volterra, a small hinterland with Etruscan origins, about 60km from Pisa. The departure of the Tour is located in the center of Palaia, from here we will go on a asphalt road transfer, but still not very busy, being a secondary road immersed in the beautiful hills, until we arrive at the entrance of a country road that we Will lead to Montelopio, a small village in the municipality of Peccioli. From here, we head down to Lajatico, along the wonderful, unpaved roads, very panoramic and without any technical difficulty, where we can admire the splendid Tuscan landscape, to see Volterra and also the small hamlet of Castelfalfi. Crossing the Era River, through a simple stone turnaround, we walk a few kilometers uphill, which takes us to the Theater of Silence, an amphitheater built using the natural contour of the land, near the village of Lajatico. At this point, take a short stroll to take some photos and eat something, then ride again in the direction of the village of Lajatico, for a small tour of the small village, very impressive. At this point we head southwest towards the Rock of Pietracassia, also known as the Fortress of Miemo (this name is due to the fact that the Fortress is located in the Miemo Reserve), an ancient medieval castle, placed at a height of approximately 540 Meters, located between the woods of the Valdera and placed on a large limestone split rock in half. We walk about 6km uphill with an average slope of 7% until we reach the Rock of Pietracasia, where we can admire a 360 ° landscape to see the Gulf of Baratti. After a few photos and a small snack, we go down a narrow track with a few stones until we cross the La Sterza stream and head back towards Terriciola (a typical Tuscan village for its wines), always through dirt roads crossing the hills. From here we go in the direction of Montecchio (small village of Peccioli), passing again, but at a different point, the river Era. We climb up to the village along a 1 km of asphalt road, to enter again on dirt road and panoramic, until arriving at the village of Montefoscoli, where we traverse the starting road leading to the village of Palaia. The Mountain Bike Tour of the Silent Theater and Rock of Pietracassia can be done throughout the year. However, the best period remains spring until the first days of June, where we can fully appreciate the landscape and the territory we are going to travel. For the prevalence is a Tour all on dirt roads, except for some small inevitable transfer on asphalt. It is not technically demanding, but good physical preparation for the distance and the difference in altitude (75km / 1300+) is required.
